The changes include limiting the number of sessions offered during summer. Usually, there are four different summer sessions: regular summer session, extended summer session, summer session 1, and summer session 2. The revised schedule has only one session that will run six weeks long.
“Unfortunately, the reduced allocations from the central government has compelled the college to take significant steps in order to avoid a deep budget deficit at the end of the 2011 fiscal year,” said interim NMC President Lorraine T. Cabrera.
“After meeting with the college’s key management team members and the leaders of each of the academic departments, we felt that limiting the summer session offerings was one of the ways the college could lessen expenses without affecting instructional quality,” Cabrera added.
The Office of Management and Budget earlier informed Cabrera that NMC’s budget allotment for the remainder of the fiscal year would be reduced by 7.58 percent, or about $340,000. Accordingly, the OMB office requested the college to “adjust expenditure rate for your activities to ensure spending is within the adjusted allocation.”
Despite the changes to the summer session, no changes to the Fall 2011 semester have been made and recruitment for the new academic year in August is proceeding as usual.
“It’s also important to note that the college’s revised summer session in no way diminishes our accreditation efforts,” said Cabrera. “We are still moving at full speed to ensure that we meet accreditation standards and eligibility requirements.”
Cabrera indicated that the college will be sending representatives to next month’s meeting of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. The commission members will be reviewing, among other things, the report from the team who recently visited the NMC campus last month.
