April is School Library Month

“This is the first proclamation of its kind [on island],” said acting Commissioner of Education Lynette Villagomez.

School Library Month has been a regular celebration in the states since the first declaration ceremony on April 1, 1985 in Washington, D.C.

School Library Month is the American Association of School Librarians’ celebration of school librarians and their programs.

However, the CNMI community does not have an AASL chapter, but it has the Professional Librarian Community for which Kagman High School librarian Gina Camacho Sambilay is in charge.

“I’m very grateful to see such a huge turnout for the proclamation signing,” Sambilay said. “It shows that the School Library Month will have good support not only for the month of April but for the days and months ahead.”

Every April, school librarians throughout the CNMI will be encouraged to create activities to help their school and community celebrate the essential role that strong school library programs play in a student’s educational career.

This year’s theme is “Create Your Own Story.”

Board of Education Chairwoman, Marylou Ada and BOE member Herman T. Guerrero signed the School Library Month proclamation.
