Tinian celebrates Library Week

In a statement, Cruz said  National Library Week turned out to be a month-long celebration.

Cruz said Tinian library statistics showed a tremendous patronage response from the youth and an average of 135 adults monthly.

The variety of literacy and support services provided by the library are heavily used mostly by children, youth and adults in the island community, she added.

“TPL has truly become an institution and a main source for meaningful engagement for the entire community, as well as providing vital linkages of information,” Cruz said.

During the National Library Week celebration, 288 children and youth created their stories and engaged in creative arts and crafts: origami lessons, piñata, character cut-outs, mwaar-making and participating in the Read-Aloud program.

The library staffers extend their thanks to the volunteers who helped by providing valuable supervision, serving as aides to instructors, providing materials and supplies and reading to the children.

“These volunteers — Veronica Borja, Marquina Hofschneider, Lucia Blanco-Maratita, Mitsue Evangelista, Kavika Knutson, and Samantha Wedding — were also instrumental in the preparation of materials and supplies for the children and youth,” Cruz said.

Aside from serving the library needs of the community, the Tinian library is also utilized as a meeting and training venue for the weekly Chamorro Dictionary Revision Team meeting, the Pacific Islands Bilingual/Bicultural Association 2011 30th International Conference Committee, and the Tinian Core Group on 2010 CNMI Cultural Heritage Assessment Planning grant project by Joeten-Kiyu Public Library.

Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Executive Director John O. Gonzales said he is pleased with the good and positive news at the Tinian library.
