Community encouraged to buy more luminaries to support cancer march

2011 MMAC committee overall chairman Dave Guerrero on Friday said luminaries are available from the different teams that have already registered for the cancer march, or from the committee members.

Guerrero said anybody can buy a luminary to honor a loved one who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, in honor of a loved one who has won the fight against cancer, or in memory of a loved one who has lost the battle against cancer.

The luminaries will be lit throughout the night to show that the community supports all who have faced or are facing cancer, Guerrero said. Each luminary costs $5.

Individuals can decorate their luminaries with the names of a parent, sibling, friend or neighbor and light it to symbolize the hope for those who are battling against cancer, or to remember those who have lost the battle.

The MMAC is the largest annual cancer fundraising event in the CNMI. This year’s event will be held at from 6 p.m. on May 13 until 6 a.m. on May 14.
