In its annual audited financial report for fiscal years 2009 and 2010 released by the Office of the Public Auditor, CUC said its water revenues last year grew by $4.5 million or 78.5 percent compared to 2009.
In 2009, it also realized gains by $1.2 million or 26.5 percent more than the figure in 2008.
CUC has been installing federally funded smart meters.
The covered areas include the Northern Marianas College water reservoir going down to Beach Road; the Isley Field reservoir going down to Chalan Piao; the Navy Hill reservoir down to Maturana Hill, on to the Commonwealth Health Center and Beach Road in Garapan; and the Sadog Tasi reservoir down to Middle Road and on to Garapan.
Before the smart meters were introduced water customers were billed the monthly flat rate of $11.
CUC said its goal is to increase the availability of daily water supply on Saipan from the current 78 to 90 percent before the year’s end.
On Rota, CUC is aiming to improve the infrastructure of the water caves “so that the source water is protected and eligible for consideration as ‘groundwater’ rather than groundwater under the influence of surface water.”
Once the water infrastructure and operations are improved, CUC said it will ultimately result to energy efficiency that will yield to lesser cost for the corporation and better services to the public.
