MHS co-op commemorates a successful year

The program, better known as “co-op,” provides education of and training in today’s job market. Students convey their feelings on the matter.

“We’re not struggling anymore and we’re not as nervous now as we were in the beginning. Now, we’re used to it,” Taniscio Kaipat grins confidently.

“The program helped me to realize how life is in the real work field,” says Makita Duenas appreciatively. She continues, “This was the greatest experience I’ve ever had in my life.”

“The best thing about the program and what I’d take with me now that it’s over is all of the effort and teamwork we put in.  Everyone was always so excited to work, especially since this was our first time working,” Kimberly Fitial shares cheerfully.

Tyce Mister, who has headed the program since 1996, describes main points that he wants the students to take with them after the program.

“I want them to have a good, strong sense of work ethic,” he highlights. “I want them to open their eyes to the level of challenges that they want from a career so that they can begin to think about what kind of education they may need.”

“If students decide to go into the field they were a part of for co-op, they will now go in with a developed vocabulary and an understanding of the procedures involved,” says Mister. He adds on, “Also, if they go to college in that field, they will already have some experience in it.”

Mister stresses how the students’ job choice throughout the program is entirely up to them.  Students discuss their career interests and interview accordingly with businesses that will most benefit their enthusiasms.

Some of the organizations and businesses that mentored include Delta Management, Triple J’s Super Fresh Market, Hyatt Regency, CNMI’s Superior Court, and the Medical Associates of the Pacific.
