Entertainment was endless for the families who came out to celebrate Memorial Day weekend at the most anticipated all-afternoon affair, one that pays homage to America’s favorite sandwich — the burger.
To kick off the summer, Marianas Variety on Guam held its second annual Burgerfest at Skinner’s Plaza on Sunday. The event was a commemoration of National Hamburger Month, with proceeds to benefit the Guam Hotel and Restaurant Association’s scholarship for the Guam Community College Culinary Arts program.
Best burger
Burger enthusiasts behold — the quest for the best burger on Guam ends here.
With two grilling competitions, classic and gourmet, competitors put their skills to the test in hopes of pleasing the palates of judges who will deem their burger the island’s best.
Pika’s Café captured the first place title for the classic burger. Meskla Dos took second place, followed by Mermaid Tavern & Grille in third.
In first place for the gourmet competition was Meskla Dos with their winning “Uhang Burger.” Pika’s Café took second place with their “Tinaktak Burger.” Coming in third place was a tie between California Pizza Kitchen and Team Aji-Ichi (from the Aji-Ichi Japanese Restaurant).
Whopper eating contest
No Burgerfest would be complete without an eating competition. Sponsored by Burger King, a contest was held to see who could eat the most Whoppers in 10 minutes.
After the grilling competition, participants stepped up to the plate, expecting to walk away with their stomachs full and a hand full of cash. In first place was David Popovich, who ate eight-and-a-half Whoppers, winning $750 in cash and a year’s supply of Whoppers. In second place was Kristoffer Castro, winning $250.
