The RBC’s very first fun run will start tomorrow, 6 a.m. at the Civic Center. The 5-kilometer course ends at Garapan Basketball Court. The first 150 participants will receive free t-shirts courtesy of the Division of Youth Services.
Early registration fees are $7 per person ($10 for late registration) and $25 per family.
“We’d really like to thank all our sponsors, especially DYS for everything,” said RBC head coach Joe Diaz in an interview.
The Rollers’ sponsors also include Martha Store, IT&E, Pacific Islands Club, Saipan Grand Hotel, and Fotten Gaga.
Their basketball tournament launches today, 5 p.m., and includes 12-and-under, 14-U, and 20U categories. It continues tomorrow from 5 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.
“So far, we have the ‘Like A G6,’ ‘SVR Saints,’ ‘RBC Dynamics,’ and ‘RBC Young Guns’ for the 20U,” added Diaz.
Teams Dynamics and Young Guns (both from RBC) will compete in the 14U and 12U divisions as well, in addition to the G-Stars.
Each category is open for interested players and will support a maximum of six teams. Games follow FIBA rules. Trophies will be handed to the top two teams in each age group. Entry fee per team is $100.
The ultimate goal.
“Like before, we’re doing this for the kids. It gives them something to do. We want to keep them active and doing positive things,” said Diaz.
The Garapan-based Rollers – more than 100 strong and growing – are currently raising funds for a Coca-Cola sponsored basketball competition in Anaheim, California next year.
“We’ll have our 16-and-under players compete there,” noted the head coach.
Half of this weekend’s proceeds will go to the tournament in Anaheim. The rest will go to RBC members competing in Guam’s March Madness Regional Invitational Tournament.
“The RBC is asking for in-kind donations from any individual or organization that wants to help out. We thank everyone for their support,” said Diaz.
Last month, the Rollers celebrated the New Year with 16U and 18U games at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
