Did you have breakfast today?

You hear these lines from your parents even before you learn how to speak. You hear this again from your teachers in school, and later on, you repeat this to your children.

But these sentences can never be stressed enough because a large number of people from all over the world do not make breakfast a part of their daily routine, especially during these busy days.

Who would want to sit down and eat breakfast if you are still sleepy or when your mind is already working to finish everything you need to do at work?

Most of us are usually in a hurry in the morning and breakfast would be the last thing on your mind when you have so much to catch up on, but skipping breakfast means missing the chance to fuel up your body to get you going after a night of sleep.

If you skip breakfast to stay thin, you may be in the wrong track because most people who miss breakfast tends to eat more calories during the day.

Any breakfast is better than no breakfast. Studies published at the kids.org website shows that kids who miss breakfast are more tired, irritable and restless and have less ability to learn at school. They are also more likely to have a higher body mass index which could be a sign of being overweight.

Children who eat breakfast, on the other hand, tend to do better in school, are more active, healthier and energetic throughout the day.

Breakfast can happen

Gone are the days when parents have the time to prepare breakfast and serve it to the kids before rushing off to their work. Juggling household chores, preparing the children for school and getting yourself ready to work would be more than enough for any parent so that making breakfast happen would be more like magic. But it can happen if you make it so.

The kids.org website suggests that you stock your kitchen with healthy options for breakfast, and prepare for it as much as you can the night before. You can also get up earlier and let your kids plan and help prepare breakfast.

You can also try many breakfast ideas and experiment with options, as long as you serve a complete meal that contains carbohydrates such as whole-grain cereals, brown rice, whole-grain breads and muffins, fruits, vegetables, proteins including nonfat dairy products, lean meats, eggs, nuts, seeds, and cooked dried beans, and fiber including whole-grain breads, waffles, and cereals; brown rice, bran, and other grains; fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts.

Local breakfast programs

In the CNMI, students are lucky because the Public School System serves about 10,000 breakfasts to all the schools for 180 days a year. This means that if you wake up late or if your parents are too busy to prepare breakfast, there is no longer an excuse to miss this important meal of the day.

Yesterday, Barny’s Pizza, one of the caterers for PSS that serves school meals kicked off the Breakfast Meal Campaign for students, beginning with Garapan Elementary School.

Ernel Rubio, Barny’s Food Services Manager, said the campaign is designed to help make the students aware of the importance of eating breakfast, will end on June 7.

The kids excitedly lined up for the healthy breakfast of pancakes, fresh fruits and vegetables, and milk.

“We got a lot of good feedback from the students who participated in the breakfast campaign on Monday under the School Breakfast Detectives program,” Rubio said.

Rubio said  Barny’s Pizza through the PSS-Food and Nutrition Service breakfast program offers students the healthy foods they need to keep on track during their busy school day, breakfasts that limit the fat and portion size to meet the federal nutrition standards.

The healthy breakfasts at school provides great relief to parents knowing that their kids are in good hands.

The School Nutrition Association, a non-profit organization created the “School Breakfast Detectives” program, where Barny’s Pizza is an industry member. The campaign is aimed to create a link between eating a healthy breakfast, academic achievement and healthy lifestyles.
