Santos works on law against cybercrime

She said the protection of the integrity of all types and forms of computer systems and data is vital to the privacy of individuals, financial institutions and  government agencies.

Santos, Ind.-Rota, recently introduced House Bill 17-162, or the CNMI Computer Crime Act of 2011.

It will prohibit the use of computer hardware, files and online communication to commit illegal activities.

“As criminals adapt their tactics and exploit technological changes, it is imperative that we introduce legislation that will combat crimes committed using computers which will potentially deter potential computer crimes,” she said.

Her bill proposes a fine of $950 to $10,000 or a jail term of 16 months to two or three years.
