Fly High, Kingz collide in Rocball finals

Fly High juiced out the Krowners twice. Fly High won the first game in three sets – 16-12, 17-14, and 16-4 – for a 49-30 win. They showed no mercy in the second round and defeated the Krowners, 17-9, 16-14, and 15-4 for 48-27 win.

Fly High’s top scorer for both games was Ryan Ichihara, who scored two xunks and two kees in the first game and one xunk and four kees in the second. Damart Teregeyo and Wilton Laniyo scored one goal each. Damart scored his goal in the first game and Wilton scored his in game two.

Derrick Walter was the Krowners’ heavy hitter with a total of three aces, one xunk, and one goal.

Meanwhile, the Kingz had a rougher time getting through the Chiefs. The Chiefs won, 18-11 in the first set of game one. They dominated again in set two, 16-14. The Chiefs, taking a nine-point lead, needed only to win set three. The Kingz however, came back and won, 17-6 to upset their foes with a final score of 44-40.

During game two, it was the Chiefs who had to come from behind to win. The Kingz won sets one and two, 17-11 and 16-11. The Chiefs needed to win the third set by a margin of nine points. They triumphed, 16-13. With only a three-point margin, the Chiefs lacked the necessary game points to win the game.

As Rocball rules state, a team cannot win a game from a losing set. As a result, the Chiefs’ late-game win led to overtime. The Kingz had the advantage after scoring more game points. They only had to win one overtime set to win the game. Because the Chiefs took the third set but scored fewer points, they needed to win two overtime sets to win the game.

Seven points or a goal must be made to win an overtime set – whichever comes first. The Chiefs won the first overtime set, 7-3. The Kingz came back again and scored 7-3 to advance to the finals.

The championship round – played in a best-of-five series – started last Friday, 12:50 p.m. at the MHS Gymnasium. Fly high won the first game, 48-35, scoring 16-9, 16-12, and 16-14 in sets one to three.

The game’s heavy hitters were Wilton Laniyo of Fly High with two aces and two kees and Kingz’ Jason Limes with three kees. Melvin Yamit of the Kingz scored his first ‘jam,’ which involves a front line player who slams down a served ball. Yamit only lacked a xunk to improve his status from a Rocball veteran to Rocball’s ‘Master Blaster.’ Games two and three are scheduled for today and tomorrow at the same venue.
