Guido Ingwer of Germany’s Wattner In Energie Investieren, his affiliates, Lukas Kwon, president of JMD Global Deutschland, and Joseph Kim, senior managing director of JMD, met with the Senate President Paul A. Manglona, Ind.-Rota, and Speaker Eli D. Cabrera, R-Saipan, to discuss the islands’ solar energy potentials.
Because of its proximity to equator, they said the CNMI is a suitable place for solar energy panels.
Part of their fact-finding mission, Ingwer said, is a meeting with the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to determine how much more power the CNMI needs.
Ingwer said a solar power plant will significantly reduce the CNMI’s utility cost.
CUC’s power plants run on diesel.
All that Wattner needs is a considerable size of land to mount its solar panels and other facilities. One megawatt of power will need at least 1.2 hectares.
Ingwer said it is not the lower price of solar power that matters but the dynamics and stability it can bring to the community.
With the strong commitment from the government and people, the solar power project will move ahead quickly, he added.
