PIC sports manager Dennis Tababa said a total of 1,859 plastic ducks were sold this year which raised over $9,000, plus $1,500 raised from the entry fees of 15 companies that joined the first Race Around the River.
Tababa said they sold over 400 plastic ducks online from supporters — over 150 from Japan, and the rest were from the U.S., Hong Kong and other countries.
Last year, 1,630 plastic ducks were sold for the 2nd annual duck race.
Three PIC employees went home with the top prizes after their plastic ducks won the race.
Housekeeping department Jay Danipog’s duck number 2491 won the grand prize of $1,000. Magellan’s Restaurant Kenny Boaz’s duck number 1984 won the second prize of $300, while former PIC tennis instructor Faheem Ebrahim’s duck number 221 won $200 for third place.
IT&E’s marketing associate Brad Ruszala led his team to win a night of team building laser tag in the inaugural corporate human duck race around the Lazy River just before the duck race for cancer.
“It was fun! I couldn’t believe how many people turned out to watch a bunch of us swim with duck bills on our faces! I really had a great time. I didn’t think I had a shot against my competitors because they’re so fast! While I was happy with my finish, I was happier with the way the Pacific Islands Club brought so much attention to the fight against cancer. Hats off to the organizers of the race for their hard work,” Ruszala told the Variety yesterday.
PIC will use the proceeds from the duck race to support the fight against cancer during the Marianas March against Cancer set for May 14-15.
