Zapanta, Villavicencio win January roll-offs

Zapanta – who gained the most ‘bowler ranking system’ points last year – bested Simon Manacop and Ramir De Leon with 822 pinfalls. He averaged 205.5 pins per game, scoring 183, 210, 233, and 196 in the four-game roll-off.

The tournament started Sunday, Jan. 30, and ended Monday. Bowlers may bowl on either day but only their highest scores count.

Manacop, entering both days, scored higher on Sunday with 801 pinfalls and a 200.25 average. He beat Zapanta in game two, sweeping 255 pins. Manacop lost however, 209-233 by game three. He posted 157 and 180 pinfalls in games one and four, respectively.

Winning the ladies’ division wasn’t easy for Villavicencio, who had to conquer 2010 Queen of the Lanes Gloria Omechelang. Omechelang outran her 691-670 on Sunday but fell to 626 pinfalls the following day. Villavicencio – the sole female bowler to pass the 700 mark – finished with 708 pinfalls and a 177 average. She scored 165, 174, 169, and 200 in games one through four.

Below them were Lala Taitano and Carol Mckenzie, who tied for third at 610 pinfalls each.

Joining Zapanta and Manacop in the men’s top three was Ramir De Leon, who tallied 768 pinfalls. He garnered 177, 247, 176, and 168 to average 192 pins per game.

Zapanta bagged $75 for his game-topping performance. Manacop earned $40 and De Leon won $25. Villavicencio and Omechelang gained $60 and $30, respectively.

A total of 30 bowlers (18 men and 12 women) competed this month – a six-player rise compared to the December roll-offs.
