DPW cleans up tourist district

Led by Ike Matagolai, the staffers of DPW’s Division of Roads and Grounds spent the entire Monday mowing grass and bushes that covered vacant lots and road sides from Beach Road all the way to Hotel Street in Garapan.

Ken Dela Cruz, DPW trade helper, said they have to be concerned about the cleanliness of the area.

George Castro, another trade helper, said they wanted to show that the CNMI cares about its tourists.

A four-foot wave from the tsunami in Japan hit Saipan’s shore on Friday evening last week.

A resident who requested anonymity said the DPW staff’s effort is supposed to be a regular routine, “but it is still something special because they cleared almost the entire tourist area of overgrown grass and weeds.”
