Letter to the Editor: Hats off to DPS

As we lay in the road, a bit stunned, an off-duty police officer rushed to the scene.  He called DPS and the medics on his cell phone.   He asked us how we were, if we thought we had any serious injuries.  We said no, but we did have some road rash and my shoulder got knocked pretty hard.  It still hurts.

In a few minutes the police and the medics arrived.  They were extremely professional, courteous and concerned.  The medical guy (sorry I didn’t get their names) gave me some simple tests and asked if I wanted to go to CHC.  I said thanks, but no.  Neither my wife nor I required medical care.

When the medical people left, Officer Danny Fitial asked us questions for his report.  He got good look at the bike, which, in addition to the blown front tire, had smashed turn signals, a cracked rear-view mirror and a broken footrest.  Officer Fitial was extremely professional and kind to us.

At a time when the DPS is often criticized for one thing or another, I can say that no police officers anywhere could have done a better job taking care of us.  To those who helped, you have my deep thanks and appreciation.  To Officer Fitial, you get top marks, my friend.  And to the off-duty officer who responded immediately to our crash, you were an angel of mercy in our hour of need.
