Letter to the Editor: Regarding the economic recovery plan

It was reported that the Department of Labor is still requiring businesses to hire locals. I’m a local, and I have an AA degree but I can’t find a job.

Whenever I apply, I get a letter stating, “I’m sorry we are on freeze hiring.” Yet they continue to hire. I also check the vacancy announcements.

The only jobs available are for maintenance, cashier and security.

At one business establishment where I was going to apply for work, a woman begged me not to take her job. Of course as a human being I felt sorry for her because I have children abroad. Who knows, maybe one day she may return the favor.

At one time, the people of Tinian went to Guam to work there and send money to their families, and I was a member of one of those families.

Anyway, there is no such thing as “qualified” individuals. But there are employees you can trust, rely and depend on.

The government should survey all its employees, look at their  qualifications and have WIA transfer them to the private sector.

I mean, you’ve heard the investors. They’ve tried so hard to find dependable, reliable and honest employees and only a very few are.

Have WIA  train these government employees and let them work in the private sector for one year. That might make a difference.

There are many young individuals fresh out of high school  looking for jobs and career guidance.

Please pardon me if I’m wrong but WIA is not in compliance with our needs.

First they take applications, then they refer our children to whatever available job there is even if it is not on the application.

I mean, first help our children find a career and don’t forget to tell them what is the salary. Then find qualified individuals in the private sector or the government who can train them. Help them find what college education they need.

I went through the old WIA process three years ago with my son who got mad at me. Luckily, my instincts and common sense led me to the right path and that was to go out to find the job my child liked and help him apply for it.

Without WIA’s help I managed to help my son get a job. He’s still at it for almost three years now and soon he will further his education in the culinary arts.

I’m asking lawmakers to find ways and means that will help WIA to look for programs for government employees so they can find a job in the private sector.

There should be a career counselor, a program coordinator, a survey and records specialist.

We need someone to publish or post job vacancies regularly and someone who can conduct a survey on individuals and what careers are right for them.

As for CUC, I think we should find another cheaper utility provider. Someone who doesn’t cheat us and someone who knows what they are doing. I think the government and the people of the CNMI have suffered so much, paying fuel charge and what not, and if you’re going to raise our power bills again and not improve your services then something is wrong.

Sell CUC and bring in private utility investors.

I’m asking Congressman Kilili to check if the feds can investigate CUC because this has gone too far.

As for medical services, how much more proof do you need to realize that many people are being cheated with their medical needs?

Insurance companies should not pay the hospital without proof of quality service. They should also be investigated: the  insurance companies and the hospital.

I am scared to go to the hospital. I would rather go to Guam, because they know what they’re doing there. I’m comfortable because I understand their procedures. Here, I always have unanswered questions and unfinished treatment due to insurance problems or lack of professionals.

If there is no doctor here for my illness why can’t our hospital tell the insurance company that I need to be sent to another hospital that can treat me? Isn’t this right? Don’t we have the right to live?

I pray that God will forgive those who are greedy, and may He lead them to the right path, may He shine His divine grace upon our leaders and guide them all to lead us all to please Him as Jesus our Lord have taught us. In Jesus’ name I pray.
