Our Common Wealth 670 to host public talk on militarization in the Marianas

(Press Release) — Our Common Wealth 670, a grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to education, research, and awareness about militarization in the Marianas, invites the public to a community forum exploring the current state and future implications of militarization in the region.

The event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Caravan of Food restaurant on Alaihai Ave. in Garapan, next to the Marianas Variety building.

The forum will feature Dr. David Vine, former professor at American University and award-winning author of “Island of Shame, The United States of War, and Base Nation: How U.S. Military Bases Abroad Harm America and the World.” Dr. Vine is an internationally recognized expert on U.S. militarization, with a particular focus on its effects on island nations and communities around the world.

In recent years, increased military activity in the Marianas has often been viewed as an economic opportunity for the region. However, this forum aims to provide a deeper examination of the broader social, environmental, and geopolitical impacts of militarization, drawing lessons from the experiences of other island communities.

Attendees are encouraged to review select book excerpts available prior to the discussion. Free copies of Dr. Vine’s books will be available to participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Seating is limited and the organizers ask to please confirm attendance via email: ourcommonwealth670@gmail.com
