(CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management) — Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point:
A high surf advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m., Monday.
What: Large breaking waves between 7 to 11 feet and dangerous rip currents.
Where: North-facing reefs of the Marianas. For the high rip current risk, north- and east-facing reefs.
When: For the high surf advisory, until 4 p.m. Monday. For the high rip current risk, through Monday afternoon.
Impacts: Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
Long-period northerly swell continues to move through the Marianas, producing hazardous surf and dangerous rip currents along north-facing reefs through Monday afternoon.
A broad tropical disturbance developing to the southwest of the Marianas and a shear line across the CNMI will lead to an increase in north to northeast swell. This will also cause a high risk of rip currents along east facing reefs through the weekend.
Rip currents will be life threatening. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.
Gov. David M. Apatang is reminding the general public to stay out of the waters along north and east facing reefs. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
