Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert issued for Invest 95W

(CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management) — Based on information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled by the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point:

A developing circulation, designated Invest 95W, is located near 11.2°N, 137.1°E, or about 119 miles north-northwest of Yap. The system has become better organized and is now under a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert, meaning the formation of a tropical depression is likely within the next 24 hours.

Most forecast models indicate the system will strengthen into a tropical depression as it moves northeast. The projected track has remained generally consistent over the past week, with the system either moving through the Marianas or passing just west of the region.

Under either scenario, the primary concern will be periods of heavy rainfall and gusty winds across the islands.

In general, periods of heavy rainfall are expected to redevelop over the next 48 to 72 hours. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible. Any heavier shower or thunderstorm may produce wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor objects and continue monitoring the latest forecasts.

Timing: Wednesday through Thursday night

Rainfall: 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts possible

Winds: Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph developing, with gusts of 35 to 45 mph possible in heavier showers or thunderstorms

Precautionary/Preparedness Actions: Secure loose objects, complete necessary errands, and continue monitoring official forecasts and advisories.

Gov. David M. Apatang is advising residents of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota to stay informed on the latest forecasts and statements through local media and NOAA Weather Radio at 162.5 MHz.
