THE Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture will pay local artists and cultural performers by next week, its director Gloriana Teuira told Senate Vice President Corina L. Magofna on Wednesday.

Magofna shared the news with Variety on Thursday, saying she sincerely thanks CCAC Director Teuira and Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Frank Rabauliman for their prompt response and swift action on her request letter.

The senator said she received an email Wednesday morning from the CCAC director informing her that payments to local artists and cultural practitioners who participated in CCAC activities will be disbursed next week.

Magofna said the recipients are now looking forward to receiving their long-awaited compensation.

On Monday, Magofna wrote to Teuira urging the council to pay local artists and cultural practitioners for services rendered during activities organized by DCCA. She said she acted on behalf of numerous artists who raised concerns about delays in payment for their work for the CNMI government.

She warned the director of potential legal and fiscal implications of continued delay, saying failure to pay for services rendered “may expose the government to claims for breach of contract, administrative grievances, and other legal actions.”
