(CNMI DOL) — The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Department of Labor, Division of Enforcement and Compliance, is reminding all businesses and employers operating in the Commonwealth that hiring unauthorized workers is a violation of local labor law and that all employees must be compensated for every hour worked.
Division Director Jose P. Kiyoshi urges employers to verify that all workers they hire are legally authorized to work in the CNMI. Businesses found to be employing unauthorized individuals will receive a Notice of Violation and may be subject to further enforcement action.
In addition, employers are reminded of their obligation to pay workers in full for all hours rendered, in accordance with applicable labor laws and existing employment agreements. Failure to do so constitutes a labor violation and will be treated accordingly.
“We ask all employers to do their due diligence — know who you are hiring and make sure your workers are paid for every hour they put in,” Kiyoshi said. “This is not just the law. It is the right thing to do.”
The Division of Enforcement and Compliance continues to conduct workplace inspections and respond to complaints throughout the Commonwealth. Employers with questions or in need of compliance assistance may contact the CNMI Department of Labor at 670-322-4365 or 670-322-9942.
