Super Typhoon Bavi continued its approach toward the Marianas Sunday afternoon as forecasters warned that weather conditions are expected to deteriorate Sunday evening ahead of the storm’s closest approach Monday morning.
Based on the Marianas Variety News Desk’s review of the latest 1 p.m. ChST forecast guidance from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, National Weather Service Guam, Japan Meteorological Agency, and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, Bavi remains on a track that brings its forecast center near or just north of Rota while placing Guam, Tinian, and Saipan under dangerous typhoon conditions.
At 1 p.m. ChST, the National Weather Service Guam reported maximum sustained winds of 155 mph. Forecast guidance continues to indicate that Bavi could have maximum sustained winds of around 160 mph as it passes through the southern Marianas Monday morning.
The closest-approach times and estimated center distances shown in the accompanying graphic represent the Marianas Variety News Desk’s analysis after comparing the latest forecast guidance from the JTWC, NWS Guam, JMA, and ECMWF. The estimates are intended to help readers understand the storm’s most likely timing and position relative to each island and remain subject to change as forecast guidance is updated.
The National Weather Service continues to caution that even minor changes in Bavi’s track could significantly alter where the strongest winds and greatest impacts occur. Residents are urged to complete all remaining preparations immediately, remain indoors once conditions deteriorate, and continue monitoring official advisories.
