THE American Red Cross-NMI Chapter, in collaboration with the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, successfully installed over 50 smoke alarms across Saipan. This initiative aims to enhance fire safety and protect local communities.
In a recent community outreach event, dedicated volunteers from both organizations worked tirelessly to install smoke alarms in homes across Saipan. This project not only provides essential fire safety equipment but also raises awareness about the importance of smoke alarms in preventing fire-related injuries and death.
“Installing these smoke alarms is a crucial step in ensuring the safety of our community,” said J.D. Tenorio, disaster program manager of the American Red Cross, NMI Chapter. “We are grateful for our partnership with DFEMS, and we encourage residents to check their smoke alarms regularly and have a fire escape plan in place.”
The initiative is part of the Red Cross’s ongoing commitment to disaster preparedness and community safety. According to the National Fire Protection Association, working smoke alarms can reduce the risk of dying in a reported fire by 50%. Home visit teams also take this opportunity to educate residents about home fire safety and typhoon preparedness.
“We recognize the importance of fire safety education and the role of smoke alarms in saving lives,” said Juan Pua, commissioner of the CNMI Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services. “This collaboration is vital in ensuring that our residents are better protected.”
Residents are encouraged to reach out to the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter and DFEMS if they require assistance with smoke alarm installations or fire safety education.
