UOG Press seeks ‘unfit’ work for its literary journal

THE University of Guam Press has begun accepting submissions for the 21st edition of its literary journal, “Storyboard: A Journal of Pacific Imagery.”

According to the UOG Press website, the goal is to “foster and promote literary activity in Guam and the broader Pacific.”

The submission deadline for this forthcoming edition is Dec. 13.

The theme this year is “Unfit.”

UOG Press is accepting stories, poems, and artwork from “voices that do not get to be heard because the stories they tell are deemed unfit.”

“When sharing their work, writers and artists often perform to what they perceive are the norms in the spaces they are creating for. They tend to share stories or ideas they think are acceptable to the space they are creating for and/or from. This sometimes produces closeted voices,” the release states. “In this issue we are seeking submissions of unheard voices telling the stories of how ‘unfitting’ the unfit stories are. These could be stories that have been told but have not been heard either because the story was not ready to be told, or the world wasn’t ready to hear the story,” UOG Press stated.

The work submitted should be previously unpublished.

Submissions must consist of an “unfit piece” as well as a reflection on the submission.

The unfit piece must be a piece of work that the author intentionally did not previously submit for publication or share with others as a result of “self-imposed boundaries informed by personal perceptions of ‘publishability’ or readership acceptance.”

This piece can be textual, visual, or a combination of both. It must not exceed 2,500 words and should be submitted as a Microsoft Word .doc or .docx format.

The reflection can be submitted as a critical essay, poem, narrative, illustration, photograph, or other textual or visual forms.

Authors can submit up to three reflection pieces.

Visual art submissions should be submitted in .jpg format with a minimum of 300 dpi. Artwork must include a title and caption and be submitted as a separate Word document.

UOG Press will accept works written in Pacific languages. They request a rough translation into English for evaluation purposes, but will publish the piece without translation after discussion with the author.
