Akarri 1’s Gerald Mamis pulls up for a three-pointer shot during a game against K-Pro in the open division of the 2nd Saipan Magalahi Eagles Club – Saipan MagaHaga Lady Eagles Group Basketball Tournament at the Ada gym on Sunday.
AKARRI 1 and Compadres recorded their first wins in the 2nd Saipan Magalahi Eagles Club – Saipan MagaHaga Lady Eagles Group Basketball Tournament by besting their respective opponents at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium on Sunday.
Akarri 1 handed K-Pro their first loss of the season, 69-62.
In the opening half, both teams fought for control of the pace, filling the first five minutes with several lead exchanges.
Akarri 1 utilized each player on the court with Frankie Satur acting as the sparkplug as he sank the first two buckets while teammate Jon Diaz kept the fuel burning with six straight points.
Although K-Pro had long-ranged shooters at their disposal, they failed to convert three-point shots as Akarri 1’s wide defensive coverage denied them the opportunity to find their rhythm.
But K-Pro was just as formidable from inside the paint with Jawn Joyner creating second-chance buckets while Aiden Suba and Renren Gaviola used their speed to blow by defenders and finish strong at the rim.
However, during the last few possessions, it was Akarri 1 that reigned supreme as they had support coming off the bench with Lance Lerio, Elijah Yu, and James Sablan combining for 12 points to end the first half with the lead, 33-25.
K-Pro fought back vigorously throughout the second half as Rodjay Macaraig started to pose a threat from underneath the rim while John Jugos connected a pair of triples to support Suba and Joyner’s efforts and cut the deficit down to 11 points.
But Akarri 1 nearly had an answer for every shot made by K-Pro.
Akarri 1’s run was highlighted by the all-around performance of Gerald Mamis as he led the assault with 12 points — including a pair of three-pointers — while Satur remained consistent with 11 points to maintain the safe distance and securing their team’s first win, 69-62.
Compadres vs Akarri 2
Akarri 2 suffered a loss against the Compadres, 53-63.
The Compadres quickly grasped the lead in the first half by using their height advantage to control the boards on both ends and capitalize from second-chance opportunities orchestrated by Jepoy Tabora, who scored 10 points to give his team the lead, 25-18.
At the start of the second half, fatigue started to affect the Compadres’ productivity, which allowed Akarri 2 to close the distance and even tie the game after Craig Padayao connected his third shot and forced the Compadres to call a timeout.
However, Akarri 2’s comeback was short-lived as they fell into an offensive drought once again, allowing the Compadres to retain the lead. With every missed shot along with unnecessary fouls committed by Akarri 2, Tabora finished at the other end while Jerico Blazo and Adi Tabora connected back-to-back buckets to collect their team’s first win, 63-53.
