SHS has goodies for those who help ‘clear the shelter’

THE Saipan Humane Society will guarantee a spay or neuter appointment for animals adopted from now until Sept. 10 as part of National Clear the Shelter Month, SHS founder Lauren Cabrera said.

National Clear the Shelter Month is a nationwide pet adoption campaign that started on Aug.10.

On Saipan, Cabrera said SHS is guaranteeing neutering appointments and is giving away pet supplies to encourage participation. The price of the neuter service will also be reduced by $25. The next spay and neuter clinic will be in October, and SHS is currently finalizing details, Cabrera said.

During National Clear the Shelter Month, if participants adopt an animal from the Saipan Mayor’s Office Dog Control Program in As Perdido, they will receive an adoption bag with a dog collar, leash, waste bag, collapsable water bowl and dog food.

Participants will also be given a free Seresto collar for their new pet to protect the animal against fleas, ticks and mange for up to eight months. Cabrera said the collars are provided as part of their partnership with the Banefield Foundation.

The collars will be distributed to those in need “and we can’t think of anybody more in need than shelter dogs going to people,” Cabrera added.

She also reminded the public that the Dog Control Program shelter in As Perdido is open on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Besides finding homes for dogs, SHS aims to promote the positive effects of stray animal adoption within the community.

“We’re trying to not only get dogs adopted, but also to change the way shelter dogs are viewed,” she said. “There’s are a lot of people here who purchase dogs due to their own preferences. They might want a small dog or a pit-bull looking dog, but there are a lot of really great dogs of all shapes and sizes and ages at the shelter.  We encourage people strongly to go look there before supporting a breeder because there are so many dogs in need,” she added.

On Saipan, when dogs don’t get adopted, they are eventually euthanized.

For residents who are not able to adopt a pet by Sept. 10, but are still in need of animal neuter services, SHS can put their pets on a wait list, Cabrera said. Email info@saipanhumanesociety for more information.
