(MV) — Charles Dewey III, also known as Carter Allen Widmor, was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Friday in Allen Country Superior Court, Fort Wayne, Indiana,

WANE 15, a TV station in Fort Wayne, described Dewey as “a man who will be remembered as an American fugitive who fled to Saipan to escape rape and other sex charges against minors….”

Dewey was arrested in Indiana in December 2020 for raping a 14-year-old girl, who appeared in court Friday with her parents, WANE 15 reported.

“She was active in sports until she was raped in Dewey’s car, threatened with a firearm and intimidated with death through numerous phone calls and texts if she talked about it, her father told the court,” WANE 15 stated.

“In a plea deal, Dewey’s defense attorney Donald Swanson got the two rape charges — Level 1 and 3 felonies — dismissed. Dewey pleaded guilty to Felony 4 and Felony 5 sexual misconduct with a minor, Felony 4 child solicitation, Felony 6 charges of child pornography, possession and dissemination of matter harmful to minors, and another Felony 6 residential breaking and entering.

“After apologizing for the matter, Dewey, whose hair covered most of his eyes, went into a long-winded complaint that the young girl made false allegations against him and that, in fact, he never broke into her home.

“Dewey got to her home only to be attacked by her father with a baseball bat, he said, and now is not able to watch baseball without thinking about it.

“His grandfather, by the same name, said through prompting from Swanson that he and his now deceased wife took over care of 3-year-old Dewey and his 4-year-old sister because Dewey’s mother was addicted to drugs and alcohol. Both parents are no longer living.

“Grandpa Dewey said his grandson was particularly bright and a whiz at computers and already had a job lined up were he ever to get out of prison, although that word wasn’t used during the sentencing hearings.

“But Dewey, who must pay the $31,000 it cost for the U.S. Marshalls to extradite Dewey from Saipan, faces similar charges in four other cases, deputy prosecutor Tracy Noetzel said,” WANE 15 reported.

It quoted lead investigator Sgt. Todd Battershell of the Fort Wayne Police Department as saying that the number of cases against Dewey “simply snowballed.”

“Noetzel and deputy prosecutor Tasha Lee sat in court with looks of disbelief as Dewey read how he was wronged in this case,” WANE 15 reported.

“Just before, his own lawyer waved his hand attempting to dissuade Dewey from laying out his grievances. This, as the young girl…huddled between her parents. For her, the nightmares have never gone away even though she often sleeps during the day and is now afraid to ever be alone.

“Swanson suggested that Dewey’s mother ‘sold him for sex’ in order to get drugs and that what happens ‘in our formative years a lot of times dictates what occurs later on.’

“Dewey’s grandfather said once he realized his young grandson was suffering when he went to his mother’s house, he intervened through the courts and got supervised visits.

“[Judge] Fran Gull made most of the sentences concurrent, which means they will be served at the same time, but combined 12 years and a consecutive 2-year sentence to come up with 14 years.”

According to WANE 15, “Saipan in the [N]orthern Mariana Islands close to Guam might have become a haven for Dewey. It is certainly remote and Dewey was able to live under the alias Carter Allen Widmor.

“But the alias didn’t hold up after Battershell enlisted the U.S. Marshals to look for him in 2022 after he failed to show up here for court.

“For now, it’s the Indiana Department of Corrections that awaits his person.”
