(CHCC) — The Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation has launched the 2024 Summer Youth Program through Public Health Services. This is an internship opportunity tailored for incoming junior and senior high school students for the 2024-2025 school year. The program aims to equip students with essential on-the-job skills while enabling them to positively impact public health within the community.
The summer youth interns will engage in projects with Public Health Services programs such as:
• Developing health promotion materials;
• Participating in exhibit booths, community outreaches, and presentations to promote vaccination services;
• Setting up and providing health promotion resource booths at various community settings, such as agency programs, government offices, village centers, and other high traffic areas to promote vaccinations and assist community members with accessing vaccinations; and
• Assisting with data reviews by working alongside a variety of Public Health programs and community partners to identify clients served by the programs who are eligible for vaccinations.
Ysabelle Achas, an upcoming senior at Marianas High School, is interning with the CHCC Immunization Program. “I hope to gain general knowledge of what goes on in the background of the hospital” Ysabelle said. “I felt very encouraged to apply because this was an opportunity that doesn’t show up very often and when I got the call that I was able to participate I felt very grateful,” she added.
Rondelle Apostol, an upcoming junior at Marianas High School, is interning with the Non- Communicable Disease Program. “What I am most looking forward to is joining the outreaches and meeting people from within the community,” Rondelle said. “Participating in this internship is a stepping stone for me and will really help me on my career development and get the skills and experience,” he added. Rondelle looks forward to playing a part of aiding the community and enhance the skills he learns as the internship continues.
This program was able to offer 20 students this internship opportunity and work for six weeks across the various Public Health Services programs in Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. Funding was made available through an award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These programs provide a safe and supportive environment for the students to learn and grow; as well as allows them the opportunity to contribute to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporations mission to provide quality comprehensive health services and promote healthy environments for a resilient community.
