THE Cobras gathered their fourth win of the season against the Pirates, 24-22, in the majors division of the 2024 NSA Youth Baseball League at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Palacios baseball field on Saturday.
The Pirates were the first to draw blood with four runs scored in the top of the opening inning due to the Cobras’ infield struggle. Ball after ball, the Cobras’ pitcher failed to find the strike zone as he walked the first three batters before earning the first out. The Pirates’ Tyler Mizutani then contributed the first run as he earned an RBI after being hit by the pitcher. Three more runs were added by the Pirates later in the inning.
In the bottom half of the first inning, the Cobras answered back with four runs of their own to even the score.
After notching three straight strikeouts in the top of the second inning, the Cobras scored four runs led by Skye Lizama with a two-RBI single and added a single run in the third to lead, 9-4, after three complete innings.
In the fourth inning, the Pirates squeezed in five runs mainly off errors, but the Cobras managed to stay afloat with another single in the bottom half, 10-9.
Despite picking up the pace in the top of fifth with five runs, the Pirates’ play continued to be riddled with errors on the defensive end, allowing the Cobras to score eight runs at their turn at bat and hold onto the lead, 18-13.
During the sixth and final inning, the Pirates pulled a late-game rally by taking advantage of an infield error and scoring nine runs to seize the lead, 22-18.
However, the Cobras were saved in the bottom half with six runs led by Jose Tudela’s three-RBI walk, regaining the lead and sealing the deal, 24-22.
Joining the winner’s circle were the Marlins who defeated the Comets, 14-9, and the Lil’ Blue Jays who trounced the Ol’Aces, 20-6.
