Annual Passport to Services outreach event set for April 26

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The Guam Homeless Coalition will host its annual outreach event Passport to Services at the Chamorro Village huts in Hagåtña on April 26.

Those at risk of being homeless or who are currently experiencing homelessness are encouraged to attend to receive access to a variety of services.

“They’re able to get information. We’re also going to have immunizations available. We’ll have health screenings. We always work with (Guam Community College) for the haircuts and we have lots of different organizations and groups,” Samantha Taitano, president of the GHC, said during the Interagency Council for Coordinating Homelessness Programs meeting Thursday.

There will also be a food pantry and community closet.

“Those who come out to the event are able to get some new clothes or gently used clothes. We also have a bunch of groups that are hosting … food drives … so that we are able to provide anybody who comes with, like, a giveaway bag at the end, and those are usually filled with nonperishable food items and the sanitation items,” Taitano said.

Transportation is an issue for many homeless individuals, Taitano said, so they are working with Kloppenberg to provide transportation.

“Once we finalize that, the details will be released,” she said. “Typically we have the mayor’s office in Dededo and Tamuning mayor’s office as pickup points. Then we also … drop them back to those areas as well.”

Taitano took the opportunity to call the community to action.

“If there’s anybody who’s interested in donating items that can be used during it, so usually a lot of those food products they can always reach out to (Office of Homelessness Assistance and Poverty Prevention), Rob (San Agustin) has generously offered up his office as a staging area. … The number is 671-475-2093,” she said.

The Passport to Services event will be held at the Chamorro Village huts April 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
