AFTER a price rollback last month, Mobil Oil Marianas raised its fuel prices by 10 cents on Tuesday.

Mobil’s regular gasoline price on Saipan went up to $5.56 a gallon from $5.46 a gallon; its premium gas price rose to $6.01 a gallon from $5.91 a gallon; and its diesel price increased to $5.93 a gallon from $5.83 a gallon.

Shell is expected to follow suit.

Tinian Fuel Services’ regular gas price as of Tuesday was $7.44 a gallon while its diesel price was $7.68 a gallon. It had yet to implement the latest price hike.

On Rota, Calvo Enterprises’ regular gas price was $6.84 a gallon and the diesel price was $10.07 a gallon. It had not raised its prices yet.

A restaurant employee, Daniel Marzan, said he usually spends $30 on gasoline every two weeks. He drives six days a week from his residence in Chalan Kanoa to his work in Garapan.

He said due to the traffic condition on Beach Road, which is under construction, his car has been consuming more gasoline than usual. Now that the price of gas is up again, he anticipates that he will spend an additional $5 on gas every two weeks.

“So it’s not good news to me when the gas price goes up,” he added.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that oil prices climbed about 2% to a four-month high on lower crude exports from Iraq and Saudi Arabia and signs of stronger demand and economic growth in China and the U.S.

“Brent futures rose $1.55, or 1.8%, to settle at $86.89 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose $1.68, or 2.1%, to settle at $82.72.

“That pushed both benchmarks into technically overbought territory with Brent closing at its highest since Oct. 31 and WTI closing at its highest since Oct. 27,” Reuters said.
