Escorted by a Corrections officer, Kevin Cabrera Sanchez, right, enters the courtroom for a bail hearing on Wednesday.

KELVIN Cabrera Sanchez, 35, is accused of assaulting and strangling his ex-girlfriend.

He was charged with assault and battery, strangulation, interfering with a domestic violence report, disturbing the peace, and domestic violence.

On Wednesday morning, he appeared for a bail hearing before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho, who imposed a $50,000 cash bail.

Sanchez was represented by Assistant Public Defender Emily Thomsen while Chief Prosecutor Chester Hinds appeared for the government.

After the hearing, Sanchez was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections and was ordered to return to court for a preliminary hearing on March 4 at 2:30 p.m.

The complaint

According to the complaint and affidavit of probable cause against Sanchez, the police received a call from an off-duty officer regarding an incident on Feb. 19, at around 4:34 p.m. at a poker establishment in San Antonio.

Responding police officers learned from the victim that her ex-boyfriend “got physical” with her.

In a follow-up interview with the victim, she told investigators that her ex-boyfriend, Sanchez, called her telling her that he wanted to beat up her new boyfriend and that he, Sanchez, was outside the new boyfriend’s residence.

She told Sanchez that her new boyfriend did not do anything to him. She said after she ended the call, Sanchez continued to call her cell phone and it got to a point that she got annoyed and messaged him, “If you want to kill me, I’m here at AJ Poker.”

The victim said while waiting for a friend to pick her up, Sanchez arrived and repeatedly said, “Hey b***h,” in a mean way until he stood in front of her.

She said she remained calm, but Sanchez smacked her forehead causing her hat to fall off.

She told Sanchez not to lay his hands on her if he didn’t want to go to jail. She attempted to call 911, but Sanchez grabbed her cell phone and threw it against the concrete wall, shattering the cell phone’s screen.

She said Sanchez then pushed her, using his weight to pin her to the corner of the wall.

She said she felt his right hand wrap tightly behind the left side of her neck. She said she shouted for someone to help her, but stopped when she could no longer breathe.

She said Sanchez let go of her neck, shoved her and walked away.

She said it was not the first time that Sanchez had strangled her. She said sometime in February 2023, Sanchez, while on top of her in their bed, strangled her until she became unconscious.
