Falling light cover injures student

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — An elementary student is a little bruised after a light cover fell from the ceiling in a classroom at Ordot-Chalan Pago Elementary School on Monday.

Guam Department of Education spokesperson Maria Reyes-Burrier confirmed the incident with Tricia Moylan, the school’s principal.

According to Reyes-Burrier, Moylan said they “took swift action to protect the students from any harm caused by the broken light cover.”

“We removed the damaged cover and inspected the rest of the covers in the classroom. We also contacted the electrical contractor who is installing LED lights in our school and asked them to check all the covers in the building and make sure they are secure,” the principal said.

The student who was involved in the incident sustained only minor injuries.

“According to the report from the school nurse, minor scratches and bruising, but (the student) was not limping while walking and had full range of motion. The nurse contacted his mother and explained the situation to her. The child expressed his wish to remain in school and his mother agreed to let him do so,” Reyes-Burrier said, adding that Moylan would be meeting with the contractor to double-check that the light covers are secure.
