House OKs 2 bills, 6 resolutions

THE House of Representatives yesterday passed two bills and adopted six resolutions.

H.B. 13-34, introduced by Rep. Gloria DLC. Cabrera, R-Saipan, and H.B. 13-136, introduced by House Floor Leader Jesus T. Attao, R-Saipan, were unanimously passed and will be transmitted to the Senate for further action.

H.B. 13-34 seeks to amend P.L. 12-45 so it could become a model statute consistent with the requirements under the tobacco master settlement agreement that enables the CNMI to receive funds for public health from tobacco manufacturers.

H.B. 13-136 would appropriate $2 million for dialysis patients on Rota and Tinian.

Three of the six resolutions were offered by Rep. Stanley T. Torres, R-Saipan. These are House Joint Resolution 13-11, H.R. 13-52 and H.R. 13-53.

H.J.R. 13-11 requests the Marianas Public Land Authority to designate a portion of Civic Center beach for the construction and operation of a Chamorro cultural village.

H.R. 13-52 requests Northern Mariana College to acknowledge and implement the mandate of P.L. 9-53 on establishing a vocational, occupational and technical training center and professional development institute within the college.

H.R. 13-53 acknowledges the importance and value of Guam Insurance Adjusters, Inc. in responding to all types of natural and man-made disasters in the CNMI.

The three other resolutions are H.J.R. 13-10, introduced by Rep. Arnold I. Palacios, R-Saipan; H.R. 13-54, introduced by Attao; and H.R. 13-55, introduced by House Vice Speaker Manuel A. Tenorio, R-Saipan.

H.J.R 13-10 requests Gov. Juan N. Babauta to institute a dialogue with the governor of Guam on the management of the Mariana Islands ecosystem with special emphasis on controlling the migration of invasive species such as the brown tree snake.

H.R. 13-54 requests Babauta to reprogram funds for the Department of Labor and Immigration and other departments that need funding “so that those pending personnel actions due to lack of funds can be expedited.”
