Strike goes on in New Caledonia

NOUMEA (Pacnews) — There is no end in sight to the strike in secondary schools that started last week in protest against a new social security system in New Caledonia, RFO’s Télé-Nouvelle-Calédonie reports.

The strike by FSU union teachers started one week ago and has already affected around 10,000 children. The strike has also spread to primary schools.

Teachers are demanding that the planned enforcement of so-called RUAMM, or the Unified Health Insurance and Maternity Regime, on July 1 be postponed to allow for some fine tuning.

Some of the protesters, who have metropolitan French public service status, do not agree with the new compulsory contribution system.

A meeting held on Monday evening resolved that since there was no sign their demands would be met, the strike would continue.

A meeting was held late last week with Southern Province President Jacques Lafleur but the only resolution was that further talks would be held.
