It’s just a game

FIRST and foremost, I would like to applaud both teams, the SML champions the Brewers and the unbelievable Northern Yankees for the great series and outstanding performances.

It was the kind of series the spectators and team fans, especially the sponsors, would like to see throughout the seasons in the future. However, most of the spectators come to baseball games not only to witness who won or lose, but to enjoy the fun and excitement of the sports.

Sometimes I wondered and asked myself, what is the role and responsibility of the empires. Are they supposed to officiate the game or watch and enjoy just like the spectators. I have witnessed almost all games played during the playoffs and championship series and I noticed that majority of the spectators did not appreciate unfair and lousy decision of the umpires and I am happy to mention a few.

It was during game 3 of the championship series—a fly ball foul was first called but when contested, the home plate umpire suddenly ruled it as a balk, without conferring with other officials for advice. So this is where I become more confused when they say a judgment call cannot be appealed. Then I asked myself, which comes first: a hit foul ball or a balk? Of course a balk—in its definition is an illegal movement of the pitcher before the pitch is delivered.

Many times, uncertain decisions are made and when questioned their best excuse is “I did not see.” Well, this is a four-man mechanic; we expect good if not perfect decisions and games. Yes it is acceptable and understandable if it’s a two or less man mechanic.

Another strange thing happened during the final game while a runner was approaching third base. The home plate umpire rushed to third base and called “Michael, Michael, Michael.” I said to myself oh, early ejection again, then I realized that he was calling the shot on third base saying “My call, my call, my call” while Mr. Nice Guy, Al Taitano, the designated third base umpire, stood and was ready to make a decision.

Lastly, I applaud and acknowledged Mr. Nice Guy’s decision to give warnings to players and not immediate ejection especially in crucial situations. Mr. Al Taitano you have shown a good sign of discipline to our young players. Keep up the good job! Let us all keep and show the good spirits to our players now and our future ones. No team, no league.JENNY MAFNAS
