KEVIN F. Castro, an environmental specialist I at the Division of Environmental Quality, is the Office of the Governor’s Employee of the Year 2002.
“I was surprised. I think that all of the division awardees did a very good job,” Castro told Variety on Friday.
As the 2002 department employee of the year, the 29-year-old Castro will represent the Office of the Governor in the CNMI Government Employee of the Year competition. The winner will be announced during Labor Day festivities in September.
Castro oversees all aspects of the CNMI’s Air Pollution Control program within DEQ.
“From the time he worked with the air and toxic management branch of DEQ, a lot of accomplishments were made. He had gathered and researched a lot of information for the air pollution control program,” said DEQ’s David Chargualaf, who nominated Castro.
Castro worked closely with an environmental technician in gathering information about 400 air emission sources on Saipan, Chargualaf said.
These air sources are needed in order to determine the level of air pollution in the CNMI and the requirements for securing an alternate air permit.
In a June 7 letter to Debra T. Camacho, chairwoman of the Public Service Recognition and Labor Day 2002 Executive Committee, the Office of the Governor’s committee representative Paul Reyes said Castro had been selected after careful review of all nomination forms.
Castro has been working with DEQ for the past two years.
