CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Prime Minister John Howard said Sunday he will use a speech to the U.S. Congress later this month to push the benefits of free trade between the United States and Australia.
Howard will visit the United States from June 8 to 13. The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks last year forced him to cancel his originally scheduled address to Congress.
Howard said he will talk about the importance of the overall U.S. relationship to Australia but also stress that all relationships are a two-way street.
“Each contributes—we contribute enormously, our troops are there beside the Americans at the very sharp end of the fight against terrorism,” Howard said.
“And I’ll be arguing of course that there’s an economic dimension to it and promoting…the benefits of freer and more open trade.”
