Zoning system for high school students mulled

A zoning system may be adopted for the estimated 2,000 incoming high school students next school year.

The Public School System is proposing the system, saying that zoning is the best and most effective method to distribute students and maximize the capacity of the three high schools on Saipan. The proposal is subject to the approval of the Board of Education.

Under the proposal, Kagman High School would serve students residing in Marpi, As Matuis, San Roque, Tanapag, As Mahetog, Sadog Tasi, Capitol Hill, As Teo, Mt. Tapochao, As Teo, Papago, Laolao and Kagman—collectively referred to as Northern Zone.

Central Zone students are those who reside on Navy Hill, Garapan, Chinatown, Gualo Rai, Chalan Laulau, Chalan Kiya, Oleai, As Terlaje, Kanat Tabla, San Vicente, As Perdido, Finasisu, As Lito, Susupe and Chalan Kanoa. They will be served by Marianas High School.

Koblerville High School will serve students residing in Chalan Piao, Airport Road, Dandan, Afetnas, San Antonio and Koblerville. These will comprise the Southern Zone.

MHS is the oldest among the three high schools and continues to be the most populated because of the large area that it serves.

Kagman High School is estimated to have at least 565 high school residents within its zone.

Koblerville High School, which has not been completed, is estimated to serve over 600 students.

As of May, 90 percent of Koblerville buildings were already completed, according to a report of the Public School System’s CIP project manager, Don Dolenec.
