Task force to promote Tinian mulled

A task force that will promote Tinian as a destination for casino gambling is being proposed in anticipation of the island’s opening for international flights this year.

The repair and rehabilitation of West Tinian International Airport’s runway, which costs over $19 million, is scheduled to be completed by September, according to the Commonwealth Ports Authority.

Tinian leaders may come up with a marketing program to “sell” Tinian as a casino and gambling destination in this part of the region, CPA said.

CPA Executive Director Carlos H. Salas said in his meeting with Tinian lawmakers last December, the task force was among the top priorities considered.

Salas, in a letter to Tinian Mayor Francisco M. Borja, said: “It was our impression from the attendees of the meeting that your office is perhaps the most appropriate party to establish a task force and appoint members who can effectively develop and carry out a marketing program.”

Salas asked Borja to consider appointing representatives from Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino and CPA to the task force.

The Tinian runway project, when completed, will be expanded to 8,600 linear feet. This will enable it to accommodate larger international carriers, including the Boeing 747 aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration is financing about $13 million of the project. The balance is paid by the local government through Tinian’s share of the capital improvement project funds.

Tinian Dynasty recently signed a deal with a China-based airline to charter flights between Saipan and Guangzhou starting next month.
