THE students, teachers and staff send a “dangkulo” thanks to Gov. Juan N. Babauta, Rota Mayor Benjamin T. Manglona, Chief Justice Miguel S. Demapan, the manamko’ and many other CNMI officials for attending our Covenant Day activity. It is important that we observe Covenant Day—it is so important that our Legislature made it a legal holiday. The founding of the commonwealth is based on the Covenant and the founding fathers that wrote our Covenant and Constitution are indeed some of the first political legends of the CNMI.
When I first had the idea and we started coordinating the activity, because it was on such a short notice, I was afraid that we would not get our officials from the government to attend, but I am so glad and thankful they made the time to come.
Our social studies department believes it is only fitting and proper that we should recognize the people that “made it happen.” It is a historical occasion anytime you have this group of people together again 26 years later. The Founders actually wrote the documents that have guided our way of life in the CNMI and will continue to dictate our future. They are indeed a special group
To have the governor and Mayor Manglona talk to my students about the Covenant was an unforgettable experience for me and my students. I’m sure the other classrooms they visited along with the other dignitaries made the same lasting impression. It was a learning experience I’m sure we all will never forget at Kagman High.
It is also important that we show our patriotism to our country—it was the Covenant that granted the local people U.S. citizenship. Covenant Day is the local people’s “American Birthday” because they became U.S. citizens with the stroke of the pen by the president. So all of those who are proud to be Americans should celebrate Covenant Day.
It is also our intentions to make this an annual event and to invite U.S. officials from Congress and the Department of Education to attend.
Again, I want to thank everyone that came out to help make our activity a success.
