“COVENANT Day means we’re part of the U.S, and it is a tremendous honor to be part of the U.S.,” Gov. Juan N. Babauta told students at Kagman High School during their pep rally on Friday.
Babauta said each CNMI citizen should reminisce with pride the signing of the Covenant agreement on March 24, 1976.
“We should all be proud of being U.S. citizens. It’s a great honor to be a part of a democracy, a government that’s governed by the people and for the people,” he said.
The governor spent over an hour at Kagman High School, visiting classrooms and talking with students about issues related to Covenant Day.
Babauta said he was impressed by the questions fielded by students which, he added, “reflected the quality of education” in the CNMI.
Kagman High School teacher Ambrose Bennet said his students “felt special for Mr. Babauta’s visit.”
The other guests at the pep rally included Rota Mayor Benjamin T. Manglona, a member of the local panel that negotiated the Covenant from 1972 to 1975, Supreme Court Chief Justice Miguel Demapan, lawmakers and Cabinet officials, including former school principal and now acting Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Juan L. Babauta.
The guests were offered leis and mwars by students during the ceremony in recognition of their contributions to the CNMI.
Kagman High School, which has about 500 students, is headed by acting Principal Doreen Tudela.
