Social Security to ID delinquent businesses

KOROR (Palau Horizon) — The Social Security Administration has begun identifying which of the 1,200 businesses in Palau did not pay their employees’ contributions.

SSA Administrator Greg Ngirmang said the agency will determine which companies failed to remit their worker’s Social Security contributions.

“Out of the 1,000 letters we sent, most of the businesses responded and the agency is open to their reasons why they failed to remit their employees’ contributions,” he said in an interview.

SSA is always willing to cooperate with these firms, he added.

Ngirmang said SSA wants to deal with the businesses “individually and accordingly,” adding that the agency does not want to resort to any legal action to compel the settlement of unpaid accounts.

He said only 480 companies are regularly paying contributions to the system “while the rest continue to ignore their responsibilities.”

Meanwhile, the agency has been successfully encouraging farmers and fishermen in outlying areas to contribute to the system.

By contributing only $10 a month, local fishermen and farmers would be able to get benefits from the system once they retire, Ngirmang said.

“We want them to be fully insured so they’ll have benefits when they retire or if they become disabled,” he said.
