GOVERNOR Juan N. Babauta yesterday declared May as Tourism Month and reiterated his administration’s goal to bring in more tourists.
Babauta said the tourism industry is extremely important to the economy of the Northern Marianas and to its cultural preservation.
“Tourism benefits and substantially enhances the quality of life of residents. Tourism naturally balances the need to preserve a healthy environment with the need for economic development,” the governor said.
He called on the local community to observe the period “with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
“As people throughout the world become more aware of the cultural and recreational resources and lifestyle available in the Northern Marianas, tourism can be expected to play an even greater role in the lives of the people,” the governor said.
Ms. CNMI Universe Virginia Gridley and Ms. CNMI International Christine Cunanan joined officials of the Marianas Visitors Authority and some lawmakers in witnessing the proclamation signing.
MVA has prepared several activities for Tourism Month.
On May 4, Taste of the Marianas International Food/Beer Festival will be launched. The Tourism Month Ayuda Fun Run will also be held on that day.
On Tinian, island residents will observe their annual fiesta which will be highlighted with food, rides, entertainment, the coronation of the queen and a raffle.
Taste of the Marianas will be held on May 4, 11, 18 and 25 at American Memorial Park. It will feature local and international food items sold by participating hotels and restaurants.
“Visitors to the festival can also experience local and international performers jam the night away. Everyone is invited to stop by,” MVA said.
On May 8, about 450 Japanese tourists belonging to the Wakai Nekko No Kai will visit Saipan. This is the 34th time that the group is visiting the island to foster friendship and goodwill.
