NMI gets $100K for campaign vs brown tree snake

THE CNMI will receive $100,000 from the U.S. for the campaign against the brown tree snake.

The grant, which will be provided by the U.S. Interior Department’s Office of Insular Affairs, was announced Friday by Gov. Juan N. Babauta.

The grant will be used to increase public awareness regarding the brown tree snake through radio, television and newspapers advertisements.

“For many years now, we have been (fighting) the spread of the brown tree snake in the commonwealth and I am glad that our Washington Rep. Pete A. Tenorio will continue to support the fight,” Babauta told reporters.

OIA has provided a total of $1.025 million for the CNMI’s campaign against the brown tree snake.

Nate Hawley, brown tree snake program supervisor, said that from 1982 to the present, there had been 47 brown tree snake sightings in the commonwealth. However, only 30 to 40 percent of the sightings were actual brown tree snakes.

The brown tree snake is blamed for the extinction of certain bird species on Guam, and even for the power outages on the island.
