THE 57th anniversary of the islands’ Liberation Day will highlight the CNMI’s tourism industry, Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela said.
The mayor and officials of the Liberation Day Committee will meet Gov. Juan N. Babauta on April 17 to discuss the plans for this year’s Fourth of July celebrations.
“This is going to be a very big celebration compared to last year’s,” Tudela told Variety on Thursday.
According to the mayor, Babauta “fully supports” the Liberation Day Committee’s efforts to ensure the success of this year’s celebration.
Tony P. Moreham, the committee chairman, said it will be the first time that the local tourism industry will be involved in the Liberation Day festivities.
The Marianas Visitors Authority is now working with the committee in making the celebration a tourism activity showcasing Chamorro and Carolinian cultures, Moreham said.
The actual celebration will be held at the American Memorial Park, Press Secretary Cecile T. Celes said.
“It is a prime area and best location to attract more tourists,” Celes told Variety. The governor has required departments and agencies to be involved in the preparations, she added.
The involvement of local Japanese and Korean organization as well as other major non-profit organizations will be sought, Celes said.
The committee is also working with airlines and hotels to entice more tourists to attend the celebration, she said.
