Abortion bill passed

PAPEETE (Tahitipresse/PINA) – The French Polynesia Assembly has passed an abortion bill, with most of the pro-independence members leaving the chamber before the vote.

The bill gives details on the abortion process and how it will reimbursed by health care services in Tahiti and her islands. It comes after a French law first granted abortion rights to women in French Polynesia in August.

Twenty-seven members out of 49 said ‘yes’ to the abortion bill. Almost all the opposition MPs from the pro-independence Tavini Huiraatira and pro-autonomy Fetia Api had previously left the assembly.

The Assembly of French Polynesia also passed a bill setting new rules for pearl farms’ production. The goal is to limit low-quality pearl exports.
