Wantoat to be declared mass grave

PORT MORESBY (NAUFM/PINA) — The Wantoat landslide disaster site in Papua New Guinea’s Morobe province will be declared a mass grave sometime next week.

Disaster officials said names of the 26 people missing since the landslide nearly two weeks ago were collected from relatives.

The names will be submitted to a coroner who will travel to Wantoat some time this week to declare it a mass grave.

Acting Disaster Director Linus Miria said 11 children are among those missing, with the youngest a 2-year-old. Only 10 bodies have been recovered since the massive landslide crashed on to village homes at night after heavy rain and an earthquake.
