ALOFI (Pacnews) — Niue’s 800 voters cast ballots in one of the world’s smallest general elections, producing an inconclusive result.
Niue has a population of around 2,000, with another 20,000 Niueans living in New Zealand.
Niue’s Premier Sani Lakatani polled the second highest on Saturday with 445 votes, and was re-elected. Also returned was a possible rival, O’Love Jacobsen, with 370 votes.
Lakatani leads the Niue People’s Party in the 20-seat Assembly, but it is split and it is not clear whether Lakatani now has enough support to win his job back.
